In most states, physician assistant jobs can range from working directly beneath a physician to working as an independent contractor with multiple physicians in a certain geographic area. Generally, the contracted position is a surgical physician assistant who works as first assist with several surgical physicians in different specialties. The physician assistant salary for contracted work is usually higher, but also garners self-employment taxes that do not come with physician assistant employment. The highest paid physician assistant I have spoken with made over $400,000 as an orthopedic physician assistant. That salary range is not typical.

Hiring demand for PA-C’s increased by over 500% from 2006-2010, so opportunities for physician assistants seems to be steadily increasing. Several employment surveys have recently ranked PA’s in the top 10 most desirable jobs in the US. In most of them physician assistants were at or near the top. Given the looming primary care shortage, physician assistants along with nurse practitioners, have become the professional who fills that need most effectively.
